It started with the sub zero temperatures that brought up a childhood memory of coming home to a warm wood stove, the smell of fresh baked bread and warm stew to fill our tummies. I did my best to imitate that. My kids thought they were in heaven. Don't get me wrong - I do cook regular meals. I think we were all just so grateful for the heavenly smell of homemade bread when the air outside had been freezing our noses to the point that we couldn't smell anything. And the stew meat was so tender after being in the crock pot all day. According to Levi it was "so tender it melts in your mouth". The homemade bread "mmmm . . . so good it sends chills down your spine". I love it when my kids compliment like that!
I wanted to try a new soup recipe that Kara had talked about and since we were going to have those cold temperature hanging around a little longer, I tried that one too. Oh, sooo good! Kara had told me that she added corn to hers and I added the same as well as frozen peas. It was a perfect soup - not too heavy (kind of like the stew for me because I'm not a big fan of beef), not too salty or spicy. Just right! It was a little like the 'new red potatoes and pea soup' that Mom used to make in the fall with potatoes from the garden. I've asked Mom for that recipe and I usually get: some of this, a little of that, salt it to taste. Well, mine never has turned out like Mom's so I was excited to try this one and have it be close.
A friend of mine brought me a salad - a big salad - and it was awesome! My favorite greens, homemade grilled chicken, craisins, feta cheese, mandarin oranges, almonds and apple for toppings. Even a homemade mustard dressing to go with it which was the perfect tartness with a subtle hint of sweet. It was the first salad I've had in quite a while that didn't just have a dirt taste to it (pregnancy taste buds). The salad was big enough that I had it twice yesterday and finished it off today. Perfect!
Last night I went to bunco game night and the hostest served calzones - kind of like pizza pockets. Eating them reminded me that I used to make those for LeRoy and have them in the freezer, many moons ago. I think Levi was probably 4 the last time I made them. So for dinner tonight I made them and I had not 1 complaint! The kids and even LeRoy suggested I make more next time so that they can eat all they want and still have leftovers. I was afraid that someone wouldn't be happy with the filling because they don't all like the same kind of pizza but everyone seemed happy. Even me . . . I still had some soup left from the day before. I was able to avoid the pizza sauce and Italian sausage which would have left me with nasty heartburn.
On that note I will take my satisfied tummy to bed and dream of more food. Lately I have been dreaming and daydreaming about foods that I will get back to when heartburn, messed up taste buds and lack of stomach room are no longer a problem. Sweet Dreams!
