On the Stage

May 2012

Justin's spring orchestra concert.

The kid standing next to Justin is Kyle.  The same Kyle that Justin got in trouble with during the first month of kindergarten.  They both started kindergarten already knowing how to read so when the teacher would be "stretching" the words to teach the kids how to sound them out, Kyle and Justin would start giggling.  Once they started giggling they couldn't stop.  It had become quit disruptive to the class over the month so both mothers were called in.  We agreed that they could send Kyle and Justin to the first grade reading group.  It helped some but the two of them would still have random giggle fits throughout the year and even though they have never had a class together since then (did the teachers plan this?) they have remained good friends.

Vivien joined the beginning ballroom dance group during the last trimester of school.  At the first practice it was obvious that they were going to be short on boys so she convinced Derek and his friend to join the group as well.  Enough boys started coming but they all looked like they were 12 and only came up to Vivien's chest so she dropped ballroom and did tennis instead (which most days was just chasing balls around in the wind).  However, Derek stuck with it.  He liked his partner and he has some pretty good hip moves that translated well on the dance floor.

During the recital he wouldn't look up.  It wasn't because he was counting steps or didn't know the dance - we all saw his moves at home.  That darn stage fright got to him again! At least he had fun at the practices and even a smidgen of fun near the end of the song at the recital when he finally started to relax.  I wish the song had been just a little longer so that he would have really gotten into it and strutted his ballroom stuff.
