Temple FHE

Family Home Evening tonight was a great follow up to the dedication yesterday. We were able to talk a little more about our feelings of all of the events and really commit to remembering the uplifting spiritual parts and putting aside all the inconvenience. I think the kids were already doing it better than I was. Their first comments were the positive ones. I'll just briefly share what we did for FHE:

The lesson thoughts/quotes were taken from a talk that I found given by President Monson, "The Lighthouse of the Lord"

We started with a tarp down in the living room and one kid leave the room while another scattered wet sponges on a tarp (Nathan was very helpful for this part!). It is dark enough at 7 that when we turned all of the lights out nothing could be seen. The goal was to get to a picture of the Rexburg Temple that was on the piano from the doorway of the living room without touching any of the wet sponges on the floor. It was fun to hear Derek squeal as he stepped on the wet sponges in his socks. After we quit giggling we did it again (Justin this time) and I had LeRoy shine a flashlight directly on the temple. This time the reflection on the glass of the picture showed the goal of the temple and gave enough surrounding light to avoid the wet sponges.

From the talk by President Monson I used 2 main points and we discussed some of the quotes from the talk surrounding these 2 points.

Point 1: Alice in Wonderland, the Cat's reply to "which path shall I take?" is "that depends where you want to go. If you do not know where you want to go, it doesn't really matter which path you take". We discussed where we want to go, eternally speaking. We were able to reflect on some of what was said at the dedication yesterday about having the temple available to us and as young people they can look to it as a goal of where they want to go in the near future both in this life and eternally.

Point 2: Who is on your path with you? In President Monsons words "choose your friends with caution". After reading 2 quotes from the talk, I took this point back to last weeks FHE lesson on the tree of life - which even I learned quite a bit from in just planning. There were some great points in the Sunday School Lesson on that one, especially the 4 kinds of people in Lehi's dream and what we learned as we compared our day with those 4 types of people as well as the large and spacious building. Point 1 went along well with the straight and narrow path, the iron rod and the conclusion in the Sunday School Lesson of "commence, caught hold, clinging and continually" which we discussed last week.

Then I gave each of the kids a bookmark that I had made for each of them (in their favorite color) with a picture that I took of the Rexburg temple at night. We talked about the contrast of the darkness around the temple with the temple lit up to represent the "lighthouse of the Lord".
(You'll just have to imagine these cut out and with a black ribbon at the top of them)

Quote at top: Look to the lighthouse of the Lord. There is no fog so dense, no night so dark, no gale so strong, no mariner so lost but what its beacon light can rescue. It calls, “This way to safety; this way to home.” ~ President Monson.

Quote at bottom: "We ask thee, Holy Father, that thy servants may go forth from this house armed with thy power, and that thy name may be upon them, and thy glory be round about them, and thine angels have charge over them." Doctrine & Covenants 109:22, Kirtland Temple Dedication.

The other highlight of my day that I will quickly add was the appointment with my midwife. Not only did I get to hear the baby's heartbeat but I had a massage (my midwife is also a massage therapist). Oh, does my hip feel better! An hour and a half with her is like a weeks worth of good sleep. I was also excited when we discussed starting the 5-W herbs that I take for the last five weeks and that I need to order my birthing kit for having this little one at home. Now it seems like it is getting closer and is more real. I have been putting off getting out the Rubbermaid of birthing and newborn stuff so that I don't get myself all excited to only put it away for weeks.

Your FHE sounds amazing! And the bookmarks are such a great idea, especially with all your kids who read. What a talent you have for listening to the spirit and teaching your children!

Happy ordering to you.
It's almost time for the 5-W. :)

I just popped over from Laurie's blog. I really wish we could have come to the dedication. We went to the open house but, my kids just aren't up for the 4 hour drive every month. I just love to hear President Monson speak, it brought tears to my eyes thinking (actually registering) he is our new prophet.

This sounds like a wonderful FHE, we are sometimes lucky enough to make it through one story. 5 weeks Woo Hoo! Your almost there.

Wonderful FHE lessons! I wish we were at that point in our family. Alas, 2 15-month-old babies, and a fidgety 4-year-old isn't an equation for FHE greatness! We're lucky if we can convey some simple truth in 2 minutes! (ha, ha)

Thanks for sharing your ideas. I loved the practical applications and visual lessons. And the bookmarks are really lovely!

Hope all continues well for your last few weeks before baby arrives. :)

I can't wait till our family home evenings actually consist of something semi-spiritual. Right now they are a little lacking. If Korben's attention makes it through the prayer I feel like we are doing good. :)

I want to be like you. You do such wonderful stuff for FHE. We played a game and that was about all I could handle for the night. I shouldn't give up on them so easily though. They love if when I plan it, so it all comes back to me. I need to be driven in this. How do you get to that point?

I love this talk. When it was in the friend a few years ago, we had this for our FHE lesson many times because I loved it so much. Thanks for sharing your FHE! I'm love new ideas!

One more thing, have you homebirthed any of your others? I am very impressed and I can't wait to hear more about your experience. I was never confident enough to have any of babies at home but I love the idea of it. Way to go! Good luck!
